Skills for Academic Success

Academic success has a lot to do with managing our minds as well as our time and our resources. Developing skills for improved concentration, motivation and mood, among others, makes academic success all the more achievable. This lecture is an introduction to get you started straight away on using these ideas to reach your goals for academic success.


Motivation

Most of us love feeling motivated –it makes it easy to get things done.  This two workshop series will assist you to identify factors that diminish this driving force in your own life.  We will identify ways to re-connect with your dreams & goals and we will discuss strategies for staying in touch with motivation, keeping up persistent action, and picking yourself up after false starts or relapses.


A Mindful Life: Mindfulness Meditation in Daily Life

The practice of mindfulness – the relaxed, non-judgemental attention to our present moment experience – is being used in a number of therapeutic contexts: stress and anxiety, addiction, preventing relapse of depression, and so on. It is also used to cultivate a calm, clear, concentrated mind that can deal more effectively with our everyday concerns. This 2 hour workshop (and 1 hour follow-up) is an introduction to mindfulness, and its practice and application in daily life.

 


Resilience

Enhancing and Developing Friendships

This group program is an extension of a making friends workshop that was run last semester.  In this new workshop we will be looking at ways to move from acquaintance to stronger/more meaningful friendships.  Core issues that will be addressed include trust, openness and reciprocity.     


Managing Procrastination and Perfectionism

Presented by Sue Todd
A single two hour session

This workshop will assist people to problem solve with regard to their procrastination practices.


Preparing For Exams

This workshop is offered jointly by the Academic Skills and Learning Centre and Counselling Centre.

We will cover preparing for exams – looking at what to focus on and how to approach exams like multiple choice or essay questions. We also look at exam anxiety and how to manage it.


 Relaxation Group

A single one hour session over two Thursdays

12.00pm – 1.00pm on Thursday 29 October
No Registration Required – Places are limited and the door closes once 15 people have arrived. No late entry so please arrive early.

If you’ve been feeling anxious, irritable, tired or stressed – this group could be just what you’re looking for. 
We will meet for forty minutes so that group members can try out a variety of relaxation techniques. These are designed to help you feel more peaceful and to reduce tension and stress, as well as providing skills and practice so that relaxation becomes easier to achieve.
