Studying away from ANU Campus


ANU Students studying elsewhere in Australia

If you are away from Canberra as part of your study program (for example doing fieldwork, an internship or compulsory work experience), you may still be able to receive counselling support.

Contact the Counselling Centre to discuss options. These may include arrangements for you to be seen by another counselling service near your location, or counselling via telephone.

ANU Counselling Centre does not provide online or email counselling, There are some community agencies that do provide on-line counselling in certain circumstances.

  • Turning Point Alcohol and Drug Centre - This free service is for anyone seeking help about their own drug use or the drug use of a family member, relative or friend. Counselling Online is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, across Australia.

  • Relationships Australia - Provides online counselling regarding relationship concerns. This service has costs involved.

  • Kids Helpline - This service provides free telephone, e-mail and web based counselling for young people up to age 25.


Support for ANU Students who have gone abroad to study

This information is for students who are currently enrolled at the ANU and who are overseas as part of their study program ie. through an exchange program, Year in Asia Program or Graduate Students studying/doing fieldwork overseas.

The ANU Counselling Centre does not offer telephone, email or online counselling to students away from campus overseas. However, you can:

  • Access the ANU Counselling Centre website (www.anu.edu.au/counsel) - brochures and other resources are available on various topics affecting students including issues such as homesickness, relationship problems, difficulties with concentration etc. http://www.anu.edu.au/counsel/online_help/index.php

  • Contact local counselling services through the university you are attached to (for exchange students, Year in Asia students, please note that not all universities have counselling services).

  • Contact local doctors who may be able to direct you to local counselling services.

  • Access internet based services including useful web sites e.g. http://www.anu.edu.au/counsel/useful_links/index.phphttp://www.adcet.edu.au/anzssa/LinksList.aspx?catid=21#webitems

Counselling Support

  • Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) can provide crisis counselling support via their Consular Emergency Centre (CEC)

The Department's 24-hour Consular Emergency Centre (CEC) in Canberra provides emergency consular services all day, every day, right around the world. Many Australian travelers can be automatically connected to the CEC or given a reverse-charge number to call, simply by telephoning the Australian embassy, high commission or consulate in the country they are visiting.
The CEC can be contacted direct for assistance from anywhere in the world on +61 2 6261 3305 or +61 1300 555 135. This number links you to Lifeline (in conjunction with the Department of Foreign Affairs). The Centre is also an advisory line for concerned family members in Australia. The number is 1300 555 135 if you are ringing from within Australia.

General Help

  • DFAT encourages all students who are travelling overseas to register with DFAT and have contact details of the local Australian Embassy. http://www.smartraveller.gov.au/tips/working_os.html

  • Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) also have a 24 hour help number for Australian citizens who are overseas for problems ranging from lost passport to personal difficulties.  You can contact the local Australian Embassy, High Commission or Consulate or ring +61 2 6261 3305 or +61 1300 555 135.
